Nigerian government calls for stronger climate action in public service

2 hours ago 19

The Nigerian government’s Bureau of Public Service Reforms, BPSR, has urged civil servants to prioritize efforts aimed at tackling the dangers of climate change in their respective ministries, departments, and agencies.

The Director-General of BPSR, Dasuki Arabi, made this call at the Climate Action Index event, organized in collaboration with the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity and the Centre for Climate Action, Innovation, and Engagement in Abuja on Wednesday.

Arabi challenged Nigerian workers to reflect on the consequences of climate change, such as the rise in global temperatures, and to prioritize actions aimed at addressing these challenges.

He stressed that climate change has direct consequences for Nigeria’s economy and environment, urging that all hands must be on deck to achieve Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement.

“Climate remains a problem for public service officers across the country.

“As a team, we will be able to push Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate change.

“Climate change has direct consequences for the economy, the environment, and public welfare.

“As public officers of Nigeria, I challenge you to consider the consequences of climate change and fine-tune our standards for decision-making procedures in ministries, departments, and agencies of government,” he said.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of CeTFI, Dr. Umar Yakubu, emphasized the importance of Nigerians rallying support for climate change action.

“We all know the effects of climate change and the rise in global temperatures. This initiative aims to measure climate change financing and the impact of interventions,” he stated.
