Nigerian Army Grieves Loss of Commanding Officer, Soldiers in Borno Terrorist Clash

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Lt.-Col. Aliyu Saidu Paiko, Commanding Officer of the 202 Tank Battalion, and several soldiers who lost their lives on October 17 while repelling a Boko Haram attack in Bama, Borno State.

In a statement released on Monday, Army spokesperson Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele detailed the fierce encounter with insurgents, stating, “The Commanding Officer, Lt.-Col. Aliyu Saidu Paiko, and several valiant soldiers paid the supreme price during a battle against Boko Haram.”

She described the fallen as “fathers, brothers, and sons who showed extraordinary courage in the face of adversity,” emphasizing their enduring legacy in the fight for Nigeria’s peace.

The troops, part of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai under the 21 Special Armoured Brigade, successfully thwarted the attack in the Kashimri area of Bama Local Government Area.

Prior to the clash, they located and destroyed multiple Boko Haram camps, killing many insurgents and disrupting plans to target civilians and socio-economic activities.

Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to relentlessly pursue terrorists until peace is fully restored across Nigeria.

Anele urged the public and media to avoid sharing images of the fallen soldiers to respect their dignity and protect their families’ privacy until next of kin are informed.

“Their sacrifice strengthens our commitment to eradicate terrorism,” Anele added, honoring the soldiers’ bravery in safeguarding the nation.
