Nigeria to Solve 80% of Judges’ Housing Problem Before 2027, Says FCT Minister Wike

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has assured that about 80 per cent of the housing challenges facing judges will be resolved before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first term.

Wike made the assurance on Tuesday during the foundation-laying ceremony for three magistrate buildings in Jabi, Asokoro, and Garki, Abuja. The event was attended by Justice Sylvanus Orji, representing the Chief Judge of the FCT, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf.

The minister emphasised that justice delivery cannot be expedited without providing an enabling environment for judges and magistrates. “It is very embarrassing to see where our judges and magistrates sit. How can we expect them to deliver justice efficiently when their welfare is neglected?” he said.

Wike highlighted that some judges live as tenants, often at the mercy of landlords, which could compromise their safety. “Sometimes, judges live near criminals, making it impossible to guarantee their safety,” he added.

He disclosed that by October 2025, 20 new duplex units will be handed over to the FCT High Court, and by June next year, over 30 additional duplexes will be completed, coinciding with the president’s third anniversary.

Wike also commended the FCT High Court for its contribution to the FCTA revenue drive, noting that the judiciary’s efforts have supported the territory’s broader developmental objectives.

He concluded that providing adequate housing and facilities for judges is critical to ensuring efficient justice delivery, security, and overall judicial welfare in the FCT.
