The Federal Government has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive remapping of the entire country for the first time in more than five decades to support national planning, infrastructure development, and effective governance.
The Surveyor-General of the Federation, Abduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, disclosed the initiative in an exclusive interview with The Nation following the recent extension of his tenure by two years.
He described the remapping as a key priority for the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF), noting that Nigeria’s last full-scale mapping exercise was carried out in the 1970s.
Adebomehin said the new project will bring the country in line with the United Nations’ recommendation for periodic remapping of cities and nations to reflect changes in development and population.
He explained that up-to-date geospatial data will directly support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by providing accurate information for investment decisions, urban planning, and infrastructure delivery.
The Surveyor-General highlighted the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure (NGDI) as the backbone of the exercise.
The NGDI will serve as a central digital repository for data on the location of schools, hospitals, markets, farms, industrial sites, and other critical infrastructure across the country.
He noted that the project will use modern geospatial technologies and digital systems to ensure accuracy and easy access to information by government agencies, the private sector, and researchers.
Adebomehin also emphasized that the remapping will help define national and international boundaries more precisely, particularly along borders with neighbouring countries such as Cameroon, Benin Republic, and Niger.
He stressed that mapping forms the foundation of all development activities, including policy formulation, infrastructure delivery, environmental management, and security operations.
The initiative is expected to begin fieldwork in 2026, with stakeholder engagement already underway.
