Nigeria to Push for Higher OPEC Oil Quota as Production Nears 2 Million Barrels

Nigeria is set to advocate for an increased oil production quota at the upcoming OPEC meeting in November, according to Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri.

The minister stated that the country’s current quota of 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) is outdated, as Nigeria now produces approximately 1.7 million bpd and has the capacity to surpass 2 million bpd.

Lokpobiri attributed the improved output to enhanced infrastructure, better security measures, and new investments in the oil sector.

“Our current production levels and potential reflect a stronger industry, and we are ready to make a compelling case for a higher quota,” he said.

The push comes as Nigeria seeks to maximize its oil revenue amid global market dynamics, with the minister emphasizing that the country’s revitalized oil sector positions it to contribute more significantly to OPEC’s production targets.

The outcome of the November meeting could reshape Nigeria’s role in the global oil market.
