Nigeria steps up bid to host 2030 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria has intensified efforts to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games with a strategic meeting in London between officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

The delegation, led by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, presented Nigeria’s readiness and next steps in the bidding process.

Other members included NSC Director-General Bukola Olapade, NOC President and IOC member Habu Gumel, Vice-President Solomon Ogba, Secretary-General Tunde Popola, alongside technical experts.

Discussions focused on Nigeria’s hosting vision, CGF expectations, and the requirements for final submission.

Key issues highlighted were timelines, communication protocols, evaluation criteria, and the Code of Conduct for candidate cities.

According to the NSC, Nigeria’s final bid will be submitted before the August 31 deadline, subject to presidential approval. The CGF is expected to announce the winning host nation before the end of the year.

A successful bid would see Nigeria become the first African country to host the Commonwealth Games.
