Nigeria has secured an agreement with LONGi, the world’s leading solar panel manufacturer from China, to establish a solar panel production factory in the country, a move set to bolster local renewable energy equipment manufacturing.
The deal, facilitated by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) on behalf of the federal government, was finalized during a follow-up visit by a Nigerian delegation to China, building on a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year.
Under the partnership, LONGi will construct a factory with a 1,000-megawatt capacity to produce solar panels, addressing Nigeria’s surging demand for renewable energy solutions.
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the ECN, hailed the agreement as “a significant milestone in the renewable energy landscape,” emphasizing its alignment with Nigeria’s push to expand solar manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on imported equipment.
The factory’s establishment dovetails with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Solarization Programme, which aims to accelerate the deployment of solar mini-grids to public institutions nationwide.
Dr. Abdullahi noted that the local production facility will enhance the program’s implementation by ensuring a steady supply of affordable, locally made solar panels while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
“This partnership will not only boost our renewable energy infrastructure but also drive economic growth through job creation,” he added.
The deal positions Nigeria as a growing hub for renewable energy in Africa, leveraging LONGi’s global expertise to meet domestic energy needs and support the nation’s transition to sustainable power.
Further details on the factory’s location and timeline are expected to be announced in the coming months.
