Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called for international support to secure Nigeria’s re-election to Part 2 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council during the ongoing 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
In a statement issued at the assembly, Keyamo urged delegates to back all African Union-endorsed candidates for the council, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to ICAO’s mission of fostering safe, secure, and sustainable global air transport.
He highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing investments in modernizing aviation infrastructure, implementing regulatory reforms, and enhancing capacity building to align with global standards.
Keyamo noted Nigeria’s significant contributions to regional and international connectivity, including hosting the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO) and supporting the Regional Accident Investigation Agency.
“Nigeria remains a major contributor to BAGASOO while fulfilling its environmental obligations,” he said, referencing the country’s submission of a state action plan on carbon emission reduction and voluntary participation in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
The minister invited delegates to the Nigerian International Airshow, scheduled for December 2–4, 2025, in Abuja, as a platform to showcase Nigeria’s aviation advancements.
He called for global collaboration to achieve ICAO’s goals, regardless of geographical differences.
The ICAO Council is divided into three parts for elections, with Part 2—where Nigeria seeks re-election—comprising countries like Canada, Egypt, and South Africa that significantly contribute to international aviation infrastructure.
