The Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday at a Memorial Service in Abuja paid growing tributes to the Founding President of the Republic if Namibia, and father of the Namibian nation, Dr Sam Shafiishuuna Nujoma, describing him as an icon of liberation.
The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Maitama Tuggar in his tributes, said Dr. Nujoma had extraordinary vision, unwavering conviction, and immense courage, saying his name is synonymous with the liberation of Namibia, and that his legacy is forever etched in the annals of African history.
“It is with a profound sense of sorrow, yet also with deep respect and admiration, that I stand before you today on behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to pay tribute to an African giant, an icon of liberation and the father of the Namibian nation, His Excellency Dr Sam Shafiishuuna Nujoma.
“Today, we gather not only to mourn the passing of a great leader, but to celebrate a genuinely well-lived life dedicated to the ideals of freedom, justice and the empowerment of his people,” he said.
Recalling that Dr. Nujoma’s early life was marked by the harsh realities of colonial rule, which shaped his resolve to fight for justice and equality as he was born into a humble family, where he witnessed firsthand, the exploitation and oppression of his people, which fueled his determination to lead the struggle for independence.
“His early activism and leadership qualities quickly set him apart, as a voice for the voiceless and a champion for the marginalized. The Role of SWAPO in the Liberation Struggle Under Dr. Nujoma’s leadership, SWAPO became a formidable force in the fight against colonial rule. The organization’s efforts were not limited to armed struggle alone, but also to diplomatic campaigns to garner international support.
“Dr. Nujoma’s ability to unite diverse groups under the common goal of freedom was a testament to his exceptional leadership and strategic acumen.”
The Minister also noted Nigeria’s role in Namibia’s liberation.
“Nigeria’s support for Namibia’s independence reflected a shared commitment to Pan-Africanism. From providing financial assistance to offering educational opportunities for Namibian refugees, Nigeria stood shoulder to shoulder with SWAPO.
“Our advocacy on international platforms, including the United Nations, was driven by the belief that Namibia’s freedom was integral to the broader liberation of Africa. It will be recalled that Nigeria played a key role in supporting the liberation struggles in Southern Africa, particularly in Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa, earning it recognition as a frontline state.
“Nation-building and post-independence achievements As Namibia’s first President, Dr. Nujoma faced the monumental task of uniting a nation fractured by decades of colonial rule. His policies focused on reconciliation, economic development and social justice.
“He prioritized education and healthcare, understanding that these were the cornerstones of a prosperous nation. His leadership laid the groundwork for Namibia’s stability and progress, earning him the enduring respect and admiration of his people. Dr. Nujoma’s Pan-African Legacy Dr. Nujoma’s influence extended far beyond Namibia’s borders.”
According to Amb. Tuggar, the late President was a vocal advocate for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and was key in promoting regional cooperation.
“His vision for a united Africa, free from external interference, inspired leaders and citizens across the continent. His contributions to the African Union and other continental bodies underscored his commitment to collective progress.”
On his personal reflections on Dr Nujoma’s character, he said those who knew Dr. Nujoma often spoke of his humility, generosity and unwavering dedication to his people, noting that despite his immense challenges, he remained steadfast in the belief of a better future.
“One of his greatest attributes was his ability to inspire hope and resilience in others. As we reflect on his extraordinary life, we must draw lessons from his leadership. We must reaffirm our commitment to the ideals of unity, self-determination, and socio-economic development he passionately upheld.
“In a world still grappling with inequality, conflicts, and neocolonial influences, his legacy reminds us that, as Africans, we must continue to work in concert for a better future for our continent. To the family of Dr. Nujoma, we recognize the sacrifices you also made, while walking in his shadow.
“The burden of leadership is never carried alone, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to you. To the government and people of Namibia, you have lost a founding father, but his spirit will forever live on in the fabric of your nation. His dreams, struggles, and achievements will continue to inspire future generations.
“I extend our deepest sympathies on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government, and the people of Nigeria. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to shine as a beacon of hope, strength, and inspiration for Namibia, Africa, and the world. Long live the spirit of Dr. Sam Nujoma.”
