Nigeria owes Southeast one more state – Joe Igbokwe

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos
State, Joe Igbokwe has said Nigeria owes the Southeast one state.

 

Igbokwe was reacting to the renewed agitation for the
creation of more states in the Southeast.

Posting on his Facebook, the APC chieftain wrote: “Nigeria
is still owing the Southeast additional one state and one governor.”

Igbokwe’s remark comes as the bill seeking to create Adada
State passed its first reading in the Senate on Tuesday.

 

The bill, which has been cited as the “Constitution of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482)” was
sponsored by the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator
Okey Ezea.

Ezea said the bill seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First
Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to
allow for the creation of another state in the South-East region.

Also, the bill for the creation of Etiti State passed its
first reading in the House of Representatives.

 

If the bill scales through, Etiti will be created from
Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi States.

Five members of the House of Representatives, Amobi Ogah,
Miriam Onuoha, Kama Nkemkama, Chinwe Nnabuife, and Anayo Onwuegbu, presented
the proposal to form a new state from the five states in the region.

 

Etiti will consist of 11 Local Government Areas selected
from the mentioned states with the capital city designated to be situated in
Lokpanta.
