Nigeria: Only good leadership will drive national development – Gumi

3 hours ago 23

Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said only good leadership will drive national development and ensure fairness to all citizens.

Gumi made this statement during an award retreat organised by the Sultan Bello Old Pupils Association (SUBOPA) in Kaduna to honour three former pupils recently appointed to key positions at the state and federal levels.

The awardees include Maj. Gen. AbdulMalik Jibrin (Rtd), appointed as Secretary of the Board for the Civil Defence, Correctional, and Fire Service; Brigadier General Abdulkadir Gumi, Sheikh Gumi’s younger brother, appointed as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Security Fund in Zamfara State; and Prof. Bello Jamo.

Speaking at the event, Gumi described Maj. Gen. Jibrin as a capable leader who embodies the qualities Nigeria needs.

He urged the retired general to consider joining mainstream politics, noting that his leadership skills could serve the country well at a higher level.

He said unlike other selfish people who assume powerful positions to enrich their own pockets and serve the interests of their cronies, Jibrin will serve as a leader with fear of God.

“Major General Jibrin is a fine military officer. My dream was to see him become the Chief of Army Staff,” Gumi said.

“Now that he’s thinking about politics, I believe people like him, with the right leadership qualities, should be encouraged to vie for the presidency. He is well-mannered, compassionate, and genuinely concerned about the welfare of others.”

Gumi also praised Brigadier General Abdulkadir Gumi’s dedication, especially his role in addressing insecurity in Zamfara State.

“His position as chairman of the security fund will help bring much-needed stability to Zamfara, which has suffered from insecurity, poor education, and economic hardship,” he said.

The cleric charged Nigerians in leadership positions to discharge their responsibilities diligently, wherever they are appointed.

In their remarks, SUBOPA President Babayo Hassan and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, SUBOPA, Barr. Musa Adamu, congratulated the award recipients and encouraged the association members to remain dedicated to their duties.

Responding, Maj. Gen. Jibrin expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as a collective honour for the Sultan Bello Old Pupils Association.

“These awards are not just for us as individuals but for the association as a whole,” he said.

“It reflects our continuous representation of this great institution.”

Jibrin revealed that his involvement in politics was influenced by Brig. Gen. Abdulkadir Gumi.

“I have been active in politics since 2015, which led to my appointment as Secretary of the Board for the Civil Defence, Correctional, and Fire Service,” he said, pledging to support young job seekers and ensure fairness in promotions within the service.

He also thanked the association for the recognition, promising, “By God’s grace, we will never let you down or bring dishonour to the institution.”
