Elder statesman and political veteran Tanko Yakasai asserted that Nigeria has made significant strides since its pre-independence days, countering narratives of stagnation.
Speaking to journalists, Yakasai emphasized that the Nigeria of today is “far better” than the colonial era, highlighting improvements in various sectors.
“The Nigeria of today is far better than the Nigeria of the pre-independence era. If anybody says we have not done well, maybe he has not known what was happening before or now,” Yakasai said.
He added, “Those of us who knew what was happening before know that we are making tremendous progress.”
Yakasai, a prominent figure who witnessed Nigeria’s journey to independence in 1960, pointed to advancements in infrastructure, education, and economic opportunities as evidence of progress.
He acknowledged ongoing challenges but urged Nigerians to recognize the nation’s growth compared to the limitations of the colonial period, when access to basic services and political representation was severely restricted.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters argue that Yakasai’s perspective highlights Nigeria’s resilience and achievements, such as expanded road networks, technological advancements, and a growing global presence.
