Prof. Shadrach Akindele, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Redeemer’s University, Ede in Osun, has urged graduating postgraduate students of the institution to use the knowledge acquired to develop practical solutions to challenges facing the country.
Akindele said this during his address at the 17th convocation ceremony of the university, tagged “The Indomitable Set,” on Friday in Ede.
The VC said the country was waiting for the graduating students to provide practical solutions to challenges such as climate change and energy, poverty, healthcare disparities, ethical crises in technology, insecurity, among others.
“The parchment of your degree is a contract with society. The world is fraught with existential challenges, from climate change and energy poverty to healthcare disparities and ethical crises in technology.
“You have spent years acquiring specialised knowledge and sophisticated research skills.
“You are now contractually obligated to apply this knowledge to develop practical, innovative, and sustainable solutions for your communities, Nigeria, and the world.
“Be the architect that designs the blueprint for a better tomorrow,” he said.
Akindele said that 338 students were awarded higher degrees and diplomas.
According to him, 109 were awarded postgraduate diplomas, 65 with Master of Arts degrees, 120 with Master of Science degrees, 25 with Master of Business Administration degrees, and 19 with Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
“Do not allow this degree to be the final chapter of your scholarly pursuit. Let it be the launchpad.
” The world is drowning in information but starved of wisdom. You have been trained to generate wisdom. Continue to research in your discipline.
” Let your work be a constant, reliable reference point. Publish, question, and engage in global scholarly conversations with integrity, depth, and excellence,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlights of the convocation included the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on the wife of the former Kwara governor, Omolewa Ahmed.
Others are the founder of Mount Zion Faith Ministries International, Mike Bamiloye; and the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, Kola Adesina. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
