Mathias Baba Tsado, a former presidential aspirant of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), has passionately called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 Nigerian presidential election, arguing that his leadership is critical to addressing the nation’s mounting challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on August 19, 2025, Tsado emphasized that Nigerians are yearning for Jonathan’s return to salvage the country amid widespread economic hardship, insecurity, and unemployment.
“Nigeria needs him now more than ever,” Tsado declared, dismissing claims that the push for Jonathan’s candidacy is driven by political motives tied to regional power rotation.
Tsado highlighted Jonathan’s reputation as a statesman, noting his historic 2015 concession to Muhammadu Buhari, which marked Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power to an opposition candidate.
“He said his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian, and that resonates with people,” Tsado said, adding that Jonathan’s non-interference in judicial and legislative affairs during his presidency from 2010 to 2015 set a strong foundation for institutional integrity.
He argued that Jonathan’s experience and unifying appeal make him uniquely suited to lead Nigeria out of its current crises.
The call comes amid growing speculation about Jonathan’s potential 2027 candidacy, fueled by campaign posters in Kano and endorsements from northern leaders and PDP figures like former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido.
However, Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, has denied claims of an active bid, stating the former president has not expressed interest in running.
Critics, including Senator Shehu Sani and the Eastern Union, have cautioned against a Jonathan candidacy, warning it could fragment the opposition and risk his legacy.
Tsado countered that ordinary Nigerians, not political elites, are driving the clamor for Jonathan’s return, focusing on solutions rather than regional politics.
“Millions of families can’t guarantee their next meal. Jonathan’s leadership focused on building institutions, not strongmen,” he said, urging Nigerians with access to Jonathan to encourage him to declare his candidacy.
