A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adamu
Garba, has warned that Nigeria risks collapse within a few decades if the
country fails to overhaul its political and governance systems.
Garba gave the warning in a statement via his X handle on
Sunday, saying the biggest threat to Nigeria’s democracy is what he described
as the “industrialization of politics,” where political victories take
precedence over effective governance.
The APC chieftain noted that while politicians focus on
winning elections, critical sectors such as health and education remain
underfunded and mismanaged.
According to him, hospitals lack sufficient beds, schools
lack teachers and classrooms, and inflation has become more of a political
talking point than a problem requiring solutions.
Garba also faulted the handling of insecurity, saying
opposition parties often exploit rising violence as a political weapon instead
of prioritizing the protection of lives and property.
On infrastructure and investment, he said projects are
approached from political rather than strategic perspectives, serving the
interests of political actors rather than the common good.
“The best schools and hospitals in Nigeria are built by
foreigners, despite trillions of naira allocated to education and health,” he
said, adding that loans such as the recent $300 million from the World Bank
were being channeled into temporary solutions for internally displaced persons
(IDPs) instead of lasting investments like hospitals.
Garba further lamented the state of food security, noting
that nearly half of Nigerians cannot afford the required daily calories while
politicians continue to invest abroad.
He further stressed that the problems were not limited to
any political party but stem from a flawed system that requires a comprehensive
overhaul.
“The next generation of Nigerians must tell ourselves the
brutal truth and work towards a more honest and efficient system. Otherwise, we
may not have a standing country within a few decades,” he warned.
