Senator Dino Melaye, a legal practitioner and self-described democratic evangelist, has criticized Nigeria’s current political system, labeling it a “greediocracy” driven by self-interest rather than the people’s welfare.
In a statement on October 19, 2025, Melaye declared, “The Nigeria of our dream is when we start practising democracy in its lucid interpretation, government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
“What we have right now is greediocracy—government of the greedy, by the greedy, and for the greedy.”
Melaye argued that Nigeria’s leadership has deviated from democratic principles, prioritizing personal gain over public service.
His remarks, shared via a post on X, sparked widespread discussion online, with supporters praising his candor and critics dismissing it as political grandstanding.
Melaye, a former senator representing Kogi West, has long been a vocal advocate for governance reform.
His latest critique comes amid growing public frustration over economic challenges and political accountability in Nigeria.
He called for a return to transparent, people-centered governance to realize “the Nigeria of our dream.”
Melaye urged citizens to demand accountability, emphasizing that true democracy must serve the masses, not a select few.
