Nigeria, Global Nations to Witness Lunar Eclipse Tonight, September 7

Nigeria, alongside several African nations and countries worldwide, will experience a partial lunar eclipse tonight, Sunday, September 7, 2025, starting at approximately 8:00 PM WAT and lasting about 83 minutes.

According to astronomers, the eclipse will be visible across most of Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

However, westernmost regions may miss early phases, such as the penumbral or partial stages, due to the Moon rising closer to or during the event’s peak.

The Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) confirmed that the entire eclipse will be observable in areas with clear skies, with the Moon partially shadowed by Earth at its maximum around 9:13 PM WAT.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align, with Earth casting its shadow on the Moon.

Unlike solar eclipses, this event is safe to view with the naked eye, requiring no special equipment, though telescopes or binoculars can enhance details.

Scientists encourage Nigerians to observe from open areas away from city lights for the best experience.NASRDA has promoted community viewing events, with universities and astronomy clubs in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt organizing watch parties.

Social media is abuzz with excitement, with #AfricaLunarEclipse trending as citizens share plans to witness the celestial spectacle, a rare moment to connect with the cosmos.
