Nigeria @ 65: Democracy only Exist in Abuja not at Subnational Levels – Adeyanju

On Nigeria’s Independence Day, activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju delivered a scathing critique of the nation’s democratic state, declaring that democracy thrives only in Abuja and is “barely alive” at the state level.

Adeyanju accused state governors of wielding unchecked power with minimal accountability, shielded from scrutiny while their salaries soar.

He pointed to their alleged attempt to undermine the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), thwarted only by court intervention, as evidence of their overreach.

He also condemned governors for ignoring a Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, stressing that selective obedience to laws undermines true democracy.

Turning to the Federal Cabinet, Adeyanju claimed only a handful of ministers are active, with most being “ghost ministers” who contribute little.

“Nigeria cannot afford absentee leadership,” he said.He also highlighted the persistent threat of “unknown gunmen,” urging the government to prioritize internal and territorial security to ensure citizens’ safety.

“Independence is meaningless without security,” he warned.Adeyanju concluded that Independence Day should be a call to action for building a nation where democracy, accountability, and safety are realities for all, not just the elite.
