Niger Police Arrest Two Over Illegal Firearms Possession, Attempted Homicide

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended two individuals in separate cases involving illegal possession of firearms and attempted culpable homicide.

According to the PUNCH, in a statement released on Monday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, explained that on Friday, October 9, a police patrol team from the New-Bussa Division, working with local vigilantes, stopped a 40-year-old man, Yahaya Dashu, from the Daba area of New-Bussa, along the Luma-Wawa Road.

According to Abiodun, the suspect was found in possession of a locally fabricated pistol and one live cartridge.

“During interrogation, he stated that the pistol belonged to him and it was for his personal protection,” Abiodun said.

He added that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In another development, on October 13 around 8:30 a.m., the Maje Division received a distress call reporting that 26-year-old Shuaibu Adamu of Kaduna Road, a member of a local hunters’ association, had allegedly shot 46-year-old Adamu Saidu at Suleja Junction with a locally made revolver. Police officers swiftly arrived at the scene and found Saidu, who works as a driver, with a gunshot wound to his back.

“He was immediately rushed to the general hospital in Suleja for treatment, while Shuaibu was arrested with the gun,” the police spokesperson said.

“The suspect is under investigation,” Abiodun added.

The Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing in both incidents and assured that appropriate legal actions will be taken once inquiries are concluded.
