NHRC, CSOs Collaborate To Strengthen Human Rights In North West

National human rights commission of Nigeria, non governmental organisations and civil society organisations on Tuesday gathered in Kebbi to brainstorm on Key issues of human rights.

The maiden town hall meeting of the Commission seeks to strengthen human rights under the catchment areas hence the reason to bring together critical stakeholders that are crucial to commission’s drive to deliver her mandate of ensuring every Nigerian gets his rights protected as enshrined in the constitution.

Earlier, in her welcome address in the second day of activities lined up for the take off of the new office complex in Birnin Kebbi, the Chairperson governing council, Dr Salamatu Hussaini tasked none governmental organisations and civil society organisations to contribute to the success of the Commission through sustained advocacy and awareness on gender based violence, out of school children and banditry.

Hussaini added that the Commission remains a vehicle through which the rights of Nigerian citizens are protected within the ambit of the law even as she urged parents to facilitate school enrollments which she described as solutions to the high number of out school children” the surge in out of school children is inimical to security as there presence on the street makes them willing collaborators to heinous crimes such as banditry and armed robbery thus the need to arrest it is in inevitable”.

Dr Tony Ojukwu, the executive secretary and chief executive officer, Nigeria human rights commission, in his welcome address said that human rights are not privileges but the bedrock of citizens collective well being as state actors collaborating with the Commission.

He urged the stakeholders to work as a united force to integrate human rights into their daily lives as agents of human protection not violators.

He decried the inability of the Commission to enforce in court certain individuals rights violation like rights to education, basic healthcare, housing and work but said the Commission has a dispute resolution mechanism where such violations can be attended too and solved.

Speakers at the meeting collectively appealed to the Commission to sustain aggressive stand against gender based violence at homes and work places and to advance the cause of out of school children by mature engagement with critical stakeholders like traditional and religious leaders ,at least ten CSOs and NGOs attended the town hall meeting which include women Home economics, federation of Muslim women societies of Nigeria, FOMWAN,”ciyon macce na macce ne” and a host of others.
