Abubakar Yakubu, the newly elected President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has been arrested by police following his alleged involvement in a fatal road accident in Surulere, Lagos State.
The incident, which reportedly claimed the life of one person, occurred just days after Yakubu’s narrow and historic election victory.
The actor and administrator defeated veteran actress Rita Daniels by 116 votes to 113 in a tightly contested election, with three ballots declared invalid.
Yakubu, a seasoned Nollywood figure with over 25 years in the industry, becomes the first northerner to lead the AGN since its registration in 1998, breaking a long-standing tradition of southern leadership.
His win had been hailed as a unifying milestone for Nigeria’s film community, reflecting the industry’s national diversity.
A graduate of Dramatic Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Yakubu rose through the guild’s ranks, previously serving as National Secretary (2019–2025), National Vice President, National Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer.
He is also a veteran actor and producer with credits including Computer Girls (2003) and St Mary (2014).Campaigning on the slogan “Continuity with Fresh Innovations for a Better AGN,” he promised stronger unionisation, actor empowerment programmes, and greater nationwide unity.
What was meant to be a moment of celebration has instead turned into shock and widespread debate across social media, with many industry colleagues and fans expressing disbelief.
As of now, the Lagos State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the circumstances of the crash, the identity of the deceased, or the exact charges facing the AGN president-elect. The case remains under investigation.
