Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade as they prepare for the possible departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.
The 23-year-old Germany international is travelling to Tyneside to undergo a medical after the Magpies struck an agreement with Stuttgart.
While the fee remains undisclosed, sources suggest it could break Newcastle’s transfer record, currently set at £63m for Isak’s arrival from Real Sociedad in 2022.
Liverpool have already seen a £110m bid for Isak rejected earlier this summer, but his determination to move to Anfield means Newcastle’s capture of Woltemade could open the door for renewed talks in the final days of the window.
Club officials had previously insisted Isak would not be sold unless two quality strikers were secured.
Woltemade has enjoyed a breakout year since joining Stuttgart on a free from Werder Bremen last summer.
The 6ft 6in forward scored 17 goals in 33 games, including the opener in the German Cup final, before finishing as top scorer at the Under-21 Euros with six goals as Germany reached the final.
Nicknamed the “two-metre Messi-Musiala” by Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor, Woltemade has earned a reputation for combining size with rare technical ability.
“He’s a player who is two metres tall but has technique like Messi,” Karazor said earlier this year.
The move would make Woltemade Newcastle’s new leading man at St James’ Park, offering both immediate firepower and long-term potential should Isak’s record-breaking exit to Liverpool materialise.
