The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Okehi Branch, Barrister Okechukwu Nwogu, has pledged to run an administration anchored on transparency, accountability, and unity, while prioritising members’ welfare and completing the ongoing NBA Branch House project.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the branch and during his formal inauguration, Barr. Nwogu, who emerged victorious against fellow contestant Barr. Godwin Onyebuchi Amadi, expressed gratitude to God and to members for entrusting him with leadership, despite being described by some as “incompetent” and “unpopular” before the election.

“My election was proof that humility is not weakness. God does not always use the strong but often raises the weak to demonstrate His strength. I remain humbled by your trust, and I will not let you down,” he said.
He identified forgiveness and reconciliation as essential for progress, noting that election seasons often bring division. “Holding onto the hurts of the past only delays our blessings. We must embrace forgiveness and work together as one united family,” he urged.

On welfare and projects, the chairman assured members that his administration would not abandon ongoing projects, especially the NBA Okehi Branch House.
“With collective support, we shall complete and dedicate this project, and before the end of this administration, our meetings will be held in our own house,” he stated.
Barr. Nwogu also issued a strong warning against the misappropriation of branch funds, describing it as an unacceptable practice that must end. He pledged that transparency and accountability would be the guiding principles of his leadership.
He further cautioned members against disrespecting seniors or treating the association like a social club.
“The NBA is not a political outfit, and our elections must not be hijacked by political interests. We must uphold the dignity and nobility of the legal profession,” he added.
Meanwhile, key voices within and outside the branch have expressed confidence in the new chairman’s ability to deliver.
Professor Eugene Ogu, Head of the Department of Educational Management, University of Port Harcourt, described him as “a humble man with a respectable family background who respects constituted authority.” Prof. Ogu said he expects Nwogu to demonstrate financial transparency, bridge post-election differences, and build a formidable team.
“Every leader must leave behind a legacy. I urge him to respect the wisdom of our seniors and use the legal profession as an avenue to help the Okehi society,” he added.
Dr. Celestine Nwankwo, immediate past Chairman of the NBA Okehi Branch, who supported Nwogu’s emergence, also passed a strong vote of confidence.
He advised him to continue the good legacies of past administrations, correct areas of weakness, and make members’ welfare a priority.
“This is not a social organization; it is a body of legal practitioners. The highlight of this administration must be the promotion of the rule of law and ensuring that members comply with the laws and objectives of the Bar,” Dr. Nwankwo emphasized.
Dr. Ifeoma Linda Agbo, a former Social Secretary and Treasurer of the Okehi Branch, said she believes the chairman will overcome all doubts about his capacity.
Drawing a biblical parallel, she likened him to David, saying he will “defeat his Goliaths.”
She passed a vote of confidence in his leadership and pledged to work with him to ensure his success.
Similarly, Professor Felix Chukwemeka Amadi, pioneer Chairman of the NBA Okehi Branch, urged the new chairman to remain focused and committed to his promises. He expressed optimism that Nwogu would surpass past administrations.
“From the way he spoke today, I trust that he will do better than those before him,” Prof. Amadi stated.
Barr. Nwogu called on all members to rally around the leadership to build a stronger branch. “Leadership is not about popularity or political influence; it is about integrity and service. Together, with your support and prayers, we can make the Okehi Branch a symbol of unity, discipline, and professional excellence.”
Other officers inaugurated alongside the Chairman include Chima Nweke (Secretary), Uzoma Omesi Joshua (Treasurer), and Patience Nwanoruo (Social Secretary).
