The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, on Thursday officially assumed duty at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, describing his appointment as a divine mandate to serve the nation.
Amupitan, who earlier in the day took the oath of office before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, succeeded Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who had served as Acting Chairman following the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Speaking during a brief handover ceremony, the new INEC boss expressed deep gratitude to God, describing his appointment as a call to serve with humility, integrity, and transparency.
“I consider this a divine assignment. If it were left to me, perhaps I might have chosen another path, but it is clear that God has directed this step. Since He has said go, I can only obey. I am here to contribute my part to the making of a new Nigeria,” Amupitan stated.
Accompanied by his wife, children, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, along with other senior officials of the institution where he previously served, Amupitan pledged to prioritize staff welfare, professional development, and institutional efficiency.
He emphasized teamwork, accountability, and a commitment to credible elections as the foundation of the Commission’s success.
“Our duty is simple but sacred — to deliver elections that are free, fair, and reflective of the people’s will. The integrity of our process must never be compromised. Nigerians must continue to believe that their votes truly count,” he declared.
Reiterating his commitment to building a motivated and empowered workforce, Amupitan added: “We will expect the best from every staff member, but we will also ensure that you have the best environment, resources, and support to deliver on your responsibilities.”
The new INEC Chairman acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly as the Commission prepares for the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, which he described as a major test of INEC’s readiness and credibility.
“The task before us is great, but together, we will overcome. The eyes of Nigerians are on us, and we must demonstrate that this Commission deserves the nation’s trust,” he said.
Amupitan commended Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu for her leadership and professionalism during the transition period, describing her stewardship as one that ensured institutional stability. He also lauded INEC staff for their dedication and urged them to remain united and focused on strengthening democratic processes.
Earlier in her remarks, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated Prof. Amupitan on his appointment, describing the occasion as one of renewal and continuity for the Commission.
“Today represents not just a change in leadership, but a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to credible elections and democratic governance,” she said.
She described Amupitan’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of his distinguished career as a legal scholar, administrator, and patriot, noting that he was assuming office at a crucial time as INEC intensifies preparations for the Anambra poll.
According to her, four National Commissioners are currently in Anambra State on a pre-election readiness assessment to ensure that logistics, materials, and personnel are adequately positioned.
Agbamuche-Mbu also highlighted the solid institutional foundation laid by former Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, under whose leadership INEC introduced key technological innovations such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
“The foundation is strong, and the path clearly defined. What remains is the building, consolidation, and forward march,” she stated.
She expressed confidence in Amupitan’s leadership, describing INEC’s staff as resilient, professional, and patriotic, ready to give him full support.
“I am confident that under your stewardship, Professor Amupitan, the Commission will scale new heights and further strengthen Nigeria’s democracy,” she said.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu later presented the official handover notes and administrative documents to the new Chairman, wishing him a successful and impactful tenure.
“On behalf of the National Commissioners, Resident Electoral Commissioners, Directors, and the entire staff of the Commission, I congratulate you once again and wish you divine wisdom, innovation, and integrity as you lead this great institution,” she concluded.
