The Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, has disclosed that the agency has trained and supported 8,000 women entrepreneurs in the last five years.
Ayeni made the disclosure in Abuja yesterday at the Hershowcase summit in collaboration with the International Trade Center (ITC) as part of celebration of International Women’s Day with the theme: “Trade Beyond Borders”.
She said, “The council supports women-led businesses through other various initiatives like Capacity Building Programmes to enhance their export readiness and competitiveness. These capacity building programmes focus on various topics including; export procedure and documentation, export market strategy, packaging, labelling, branding, as well as digitalisation and e-commerce. NEPC has trained and supported over 8000 women entrepreneurs from 2019 till date.”

Secondly, she revealed that following the launch of the WTO/ITC Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund in February 2024, the NEPC has been selected as one of the Business Support Organisations (BSO) to implement phase 1 of this project.
“Only 4 BSOs were selected out of 600 that applied and NEPC was selected to represent Nigeria as the only African country on the list. This is great news for the country and for our women as the WEIDE Fund aims to support women entrepreneurs in developing and least-developed countries to adopt digital technologies and expand the online presence of their enterprises,” She added.
In addition, the NEPC ED stated that 125 women have been sponsored to acquire certifications such as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and ISO 22000 free of charge.
