The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has shut down 22 illegally operating Colleges of Education following a nationwide crackdown on unaccredited institutions.
The NCCE announced that the closures were part of a comprehensive effort that included personnel audits and financial monitoring across all 21 federal Colleges of Education to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
The move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive to eliminate illegal higher institutions undermining Nigeria’s education sector.
Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, condemned “certificate millers” for threatening academic integrity.
“This administration is committed to strengthening coordination among agencies like the National Universities Commission, the National Board for Technical Education, the National Youth Service Corps, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, and the NCCE to enhance efficiency and quality,” Tinubu stated.
He emphasized that these efforts aim to eliminate forgery and unrecognized institutions, ensuring a robust education ecosystem.
