Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, has reiterated the need for regional cooperation of the management, governance, conservation and protection of the shared water reserves of the Nigeria Basin and Illumeden-Taoudeni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System (NB-ITTAS).

He said the development would strengthen integrated water resources management (IWRM) for the benefit of the communities and for ecosystem resilience.

The director general stated this at the national validation workshop on strategic action plan of the project with the theme, “Improving IWRM Knowledge-based Management and Governance of the Nigeria Basin and the lullemeden Taoudent/Taruzrouft Aquifer System,” held in Abuja.

He emphasised that the trans-boundary diagnostic analysis (TDA) of the entire ITTAS has been achieved, stating that the next focus is the development of the strategic action plan covering an area of about 2.5million km2 and extending to cover seven countries such as Algeria, Benin Republic, Bukina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria.

Mohammed informed the participants that member countries had selected the theme for the pilot project titled, “Improving Water Resources Availability for Facing Climate Change Impact in Wamako, Sokoto State.”

He further underscored the significance of the project, maintaining that it would ensure that local stakeholders are aware of the issues and strengthen their capacities for the improvement of water resources management and protection.
