The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Zone C has called on governors in the South East region to intensify efforts in tackling ritual killings and domestic violence.
This was part of a communique issued at the end of the South East Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) Meeting held in Umuahia, Abia state.
The communique was signed by the Communique Drafting Committee, Imo State NAWOJ Chairperson: Dorothy Nnaji, Anambra State NAWOJ Chairperson: Comrade Tochukwu Ihejike and Enugu State NAWOJ Secretary : Comrade Ogochukwu Chukwudike
The ZEC commended the Abia State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Chioma Otti, for hosting the event.
The Zonal Executive Council Meeting, is the first of it’s kind, and was presided over by the National Vice President, Zone C , Comrade Amaka Agbo.
The ZEC also applauded the South East governors for their leadership quality, which has been visible through the blueprint of their administration in the region. However, the council expressed concern over the rise of ritual killings in the zone and called on the governors to beef up security measures to tackle the menace.
In addition, the ZEC commended the wives of the five South East governors for their proactive measures in addressing gender-based violence in their respective states.
The Communique demanded collaboration with the first ladies to further address the issue.
The ZEC also called for an amendment to the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Law) to accommodate more stringent measures in tackling incessant crimes.
The Communique expressed concern over the increasing incidents of domestic violence and spouse battery in the South East.
The ZEC also advocated for training and retraining of journalists to sustain their integrity while discharging their duties.
It thereby called on the Nigeria Police and the Judiciary, especially those in the South East, to rise up to their responsibility.
