The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) has expressed gratitude for First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s announcement to launch a crowdfunding initiative to fund the completion of its headquarters, a project stalled for 19 years due to funding shortages.
Orvell Diô, the NLN’s Public Relations Officer, described the move as a significant boost that highlights the impactful leadership of National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Chinwe Anunobi.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, September 5, 2025, Diô emphasized that the First Lady’s involvement underscores the recognition of Anunobi’s efforts to advance the library’s mission.
“The National Librarian’s work has caught the attention of prominent Nigerians, and this initiative shows that her advocacy is yielding results,” he said.
He noted that the crowdfunding campaign, set to be launched as part of Mrs. Tinubu’s 65th birthday celebration later this month, will raise public awareness about the project’s challenges and encourage collective ownership among Nigerians.
“The National Library is the cornerstone of Nigeria’s intellectual and cultural heritage, serving as the primary repository of our knowledge resources,” Diô stated.
He highlighted that the crowdfunding effort provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and institutions to contribute to preserving the nation’s educational legacy.
The initiative is expected to address chronic funding gaps caused by years of inadequate budgetary allocations.Diô commended Anunobi’s eight-point agenda, which has sustained momentum for the library’s development despite setbacks.
He expressed optimism that the First Lady’s support would not only accelerate the headquarters’ completion but also strengthen confidence among local and international stakeholders.
“If Professor Anunobi wasn’t doing something impactful, this level of attention wouldn’t be possible,” he remarked.
The NLN headquarters project, initiated nearly two decades ago, has remained incomplete due to financial constraints.
Mrs. Tinubu, describing the project’s completion as the “best birthday gift” she could receive, announced plans to rally public contributions to finally bring the facility to fruition.
Diô also highlighted Anunobi’s recent achievements on the global stage, noting her election as the First Vice Chairman of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries—the first African to hold the position.
Additionally, she has been invited to speak at the 50th anniversary of the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) International Centre in October, further elevating Nigeria’s profile in global library networks.
The NLN remains hopeful that the crowdfunding initiative, combined with Anunobi’s leadership and the First Lady’s high-profile support, will mark a turning point in completing the long-overdue headquarters, ensuring it serves as a vital resource for future generations.
