LAFIA – Students under the aegis of Nasarawa State Students Association studying in various institutions of higher learning, have pledged to collaborate with the security agencies to ensure that all campuses in the state are well protected from invaders.
Com. Ovey Abimiku David, the newly elected president of the Association made the promise in Lafia, the state capital shortly after the National Rebirth Convention of NASSA where he emerged victorious in the contest, after beating his closest rival with 42 votes.
He explained that during his campaigns, he had sought audience from the relevant stakeholders and security agencies in Nasarawa State in order to proffer solutions to the challenges that the students had been passing through.
He said, “We are going to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and all security agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of our students in all campuses.
“With the support of the security agencies, we will also work towards setting up a group called the Students Security Forum under NASSA in all the various institutions we have in Nasarawa State.”
DAILY INDEPENDENT who monitored the election, reports that out of the 15 vacant positions, only four were contested during the election while eleven were unopposed.
The 15 new executives are expected to pilot the affairs of NASSA for the next one year.
Speaking on behalf of the new executives of the association, Com. Ovey Abimiku David, assured that they would do everything within their powers to ensure that they meet up with the expectations of the indigenous students studying in the various institutions in Nasarawa and other states in the country.
While commending the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule for always prioritising the welfare of students through bursary payments and scholarships, the President-elect expressed gratitude to all the students who participated in the electoral process and voted for him.
“I am indeed grateful to everyone of you (Students) for the confidence reposed in me to lead the association, and I promise to do my best to take NASSA to greater heights,” he added.
Earlier, declaring the results of the elections conducted, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Committee, Yunusa Yusuf Baduku said Ovey Abimiku David, from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi polled a total of 86 votes to beat his closest rival, Balarabe Nuhu Okoh from the same University who got 44 votes, adding that Aisha Musa and Dauda Kante both from the Federal University of Lafia got 35 and seven votes respectively.
“The election for the position of President of NASSA has been held. The total number of accredited voters were 175 but we had three invalid votes during the poll.
“By the powers vested on me as the IELCOM chairman, I hereby declare that Ovey Abimiku David of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected,” he said.
Baduku who is the immediate-past President of the Association, further mentioned the winner of the Secretary General position as Muhammed Akabe from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, who polled 105 votes while his contender, Musa Adeka from the Federal University of Lafia got 53 votes.
“Other positions contested are the Senate President, and Director of Welfare. The Senate President position was keenly contested where Yahuza Saidu from Aliko Dangote University of Technology, Kano got 60 votes, while his rival, Asabitu Ashuku from Al-Istiqama University in Kano State got 59 votes.
“For that of the Director of Welfare, Bashir Abdullahi from the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa got 105 votes, while Abdulkarim Aliyu from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi scored 21 votes,” he added.
