The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a nationwide protest calling for the release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement dated October 13, 2025, and signed by National President Comrade Atiku Isah, the students’ body said the protest, tagged “Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” is scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, with students from all regions heading to Abuja.
The decision follows resolutions from a recent NANS executive meeting chaired by the president.

“Following our recent executive meeting, we are calling on all Nigerian students to join the nationwide ‘Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’ protest on Monday, October 20, 2025,” the statement said.
To ensure proper coordination, students will first assemble at designated points in their respective regions before moving together to Abuja. South West students will meet in Ekiti, while South East students will gather in Enugu.
Students from the South-South zone will assemble in Edo, North East students in Bauchi, North West students in Kano, and North Central students in Lokoja, Kogi State, before proceeding collectively to the Federal Capital Territory.
NANS said ten buses have been allocated to each region for transportation, with logistics and arrangements managed by Students’ Union Government (SUG) leaders at state and campus levels.
“This protest is part of our demand for justice, civil rights, and democratic accountability,” Isah said. “As students, we believe freedom comes through struggle, and we remain committed to peaceful advocacy for what is right.”
The demonstration highlights NANS’s unified position on a politically sensitive issue, as Kanu’s detention has been a source of unrest, particularly in the South East.
The announcement comes amid renewed calls from civil rights groups and Igbo political organizations for Kanu’s unconditional release, following multiple court rulings declaring his detention unlawful.
