NAN Reporter Joins HumAngle Conflict Reporting Fellowship

By Martha Agas

A staff member of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Martha Agas, is among 10 journalists selected for the maiden HumAngle Fellowship for Reporting Conflict and Missing Persons (HCMPF).

The fellowship is organised by HumAngle in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

It aims to strengthen journalists’ capacity for trauma-informed conflict reporting and promote awareness on the missing persons crisis in Nigeria.

Agas, an Editor and Assistant Chief Correspondent with NAN, is known for her commitment to reporting on vulnerable and marginalised communities, a passion that has earned her recognition and awards from various organisations.

In a statement on Tuesday, HumAngle’s Managing Editor, Hauwa Nuhu, said the selected fellows are mid-career and senior journalists drawn from both local and international media organisations.

She said over 200 applications were received during the two-week application window, adding that the final 10 participants emerged after a rigorous shortlisting and interview process.

According to her, the selected fellows are expected to arrive in Abuja on Nov. 3, ahead of the three-day training scheduled for Nov. 4 to Nov. 6.

Nuhu noted that the ICRC has consistently supported efforts to trace missing persons and reunite families affected by conflict, while also providing psychological and economic assistance to victims.

She added that HumAngle has carried out extensive work on missing persons, particularly in Nigeria’s North-East, documenting thousands of cases through its Missing Persons Dashboard.

“The training will equip participants with practical skills in human-centred conflict reporting, ethical journalism, and psychological well-being for reporters,” she said.

She added that experts from HumAngle and the ICRC would facilitate the sessions.

Other fellows include Patricia Ononye (AIT), Ben Ezeamalu (Reuters), Stephen Kenechi (The Cable), Rahima Dokaji (Daily Trust), and Yakubu Mohammed (Premium Times).

Also included are Olisah Chukwuma (DW), Hauwa Maikeffi (Beyond the Pages), Anibe Idajili (CrisPNG) and Abubakar Abdullahi, a Freelancer. (NAN)
