NAFDAC Destroys ₦15 Billion Worth of Fake, Expired Drugs, Consumables in Ibadan

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed counterfeit, expired, banned, and unwholesome pharmaceutical products and consumables worth over ₦15 billion at the Moniya dumpsite in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The exercise was overseen by representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Association of Community Pharmacists.

Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, speaking on behalf of Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the destruction underscored the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from harmful and substandard products.

The destroyed items, valued at ₦15 billion, included Analgin, Cocodamol, codeine cough syrups, tramadol, oxytocin, falsified vaccines, and other unregistered or counterfeit medicines.

Recent enforcement efforts uncovered a consignment of anti-malaria drugs disguised as diclofenac and illegal cosmetic factories operating within a military barracks in Lagos.Adeyeye praised the Nigeria Customs Service for transferring 25 containers of seized items, including tramadol, artesunate injections, codeine-based syrups, and prohibited frozen chicken, all of which were destroyed.

“We are committed to ensuring that food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages in Nigeria are safe and effective,” she said, emphasizing that the exercise prevents these products from re-entering circulation.

Oyo State NAFDAC Director, Mr. Samuel Adeyemi, reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for substandard goods and urged citizens to report suspicious products. “If you see something, say something,” he said.

Adeyeye called on community leaders, health practitioners, religious leaders, and the media to raise awareness about the risks of purchasing from unauthorized vendors, stressing, “Together, we can protect the health and safety of all Nigerians.”
