“My Exit From Mavin Records Was Premature” – Reekado Banks

Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has reflected on his exit from Mavin Records, admitting that he left the label earlier than he should have.

The artist, who gained fame after joining Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records and winning Rookie of the Year at The Headies in 2014 before clinching the highly debated Next Rated award in 2015, parted ways with the label in 2018 to establish his own imprint, Banks Music.

In a recent chat with reality TV star Teddy A on Echoo Room, posted on X on Tuesday, Banks explained that while his departure wasn’t due to any conflict, he later realized he wasn’t fully prepared for the business side of music.

“It [my exit from Mavin Records] wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do — I wanted to leave. Anyways, my contract has ended two years prior. I signed a three-year contract and I allowed it to ride for another two years. So, I was there for five years without reviewing the contract,” he recounted.

Continuing, he added: “So, when it was time, I thought I wanted to do this [leave] now. I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey, as many people would view it, prematurely. As soon as I jumped into the sea as well, I realised how premature it was.”
