The Anambra State House of Assembly and the Imeobi of Onitsha Traditional Council have fixed Saturday, February 15, for the burial of the lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 State Constituency in the Assembly, Justice Azuka, who was killed by his abductors.
Speaker of the Assembly, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, announced during the resumed plenary of the House on Tuesday that the lawmaker would be buried on Saturday in Onitsha, Onitsha North Local Government Area of the state.
Azuka was kidnapped on 24 December 2024, and his decomposing body was found along the Second Niger Bridge, Onitsha, on 6 February 2025.
The Speaker said that a valedictory session would be held in his honour on Friday, 14 February 2025, at 11 a.m. at the State House of Assembly complex in Awka, while the burial would take place on Saturday.
“On Saturday, 15 February 2025, a burial Mass shall take place at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Awka Road, Onitsha, at 11 a.m. The body will lie in state at Onitsha North Stadium at 10:30 a.m.,” he added.
Justice Azuka (Labour Party) was sworn in on Tuesday, 19 December 2023, after defeating the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the former occupant of the seat, at the Appeal Court. He served only one year and five days in the 8th Assembly before his abduction and subsequent demise.
He was the Chairman of the House Committee on CSO Establishment and Labour Matters, as well as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions.
