MTN’s MoMo Rwanda now has 5.8m subscribers, records 30.2% surge in revenue in 9 months


MoMo Rwanda, MTN Rwanda‘s fintech arm, has seen its revenue up by 30.2% year-on-year (YoY) to Rwf 109.4 billion for the nine months ended 30 September 2025. This is according to the company’s financial results made available on its official blog page. 

MTN Rwanda’s fintech sector recorded significant milestones during the period as active MoMo subscribers increased by 12.2% YoY to 5.8 million from January to September 2025. The result was fueled by an expanding merchant network, which reached 578,000 by the end of the third quarter.

Chantal Kagame, Chief Executive Officer of Mobile Money Rwanda Ltd, noted that MoMo remains at the heart of this growth story, connecting people to opportunity and prosperity. While MTN Rwanda’s customer base surpassed 8 million during the period, Kagame noted that MoMo has been pivotal towards this growth story. 

Our MoMo customer base grew by 634,000, reaching 5.8 million, a strong testament to the trust and adoption Rwandans continue to place in us as they embrace a digital lifestyle,” she said.

MoMo revenue was up 30.2% to Rwf 109.4 billion, driven by the expansion of advanced services (payments, remittances and lending), which grew by 37.0% and now contribute 28.5% of MoMo revenue. 

MoMo’s contribution to service revenue rose to 50.6%, a testament to its role in driving financial inclusion and Rwanda’s transition toward a cashless economy. During the period, MTN Rwanda’s service revenue increased by 14.2% to Rwf 216.2 billion.

In addition, average monthly MoMo transaction volumes have reached a record 246 million, another testament to MoMo’s integration into everyday life.

During the period, the company surpassed 8 million mobile subscribers, underscoring its ongoing mission of digital transformation in Rwanda. 

Mobile Subscribers grew by 6.9% to 8.1 million, while active data subscribers increased by 7.5% to 2.5 million. Also, data revenue grew by 7.9% to Rwf 35.8 billion, driven by a 43.7% increase in 4G users to 1.5 million and 120.3% growth in 4G traffic to 36 petabytes.

The company continue to drive smartphone adoption through initiatives such as ‘Tunga Taci na MTN’. 

The project, launched in August 2025, is a new device financing programme that enables customers to acquire smartphones through flexible monthly payment plans. The mission is to make smartphone ownership more affordable and accessible. 

The mission supports the East African country’s Vision 2050 agenda of building a digitally empowered society.
