MTN Nigeria restores network services in parts of Adamawa, Borno and Kano

MTN Nigeria has today announced that it has successfully restored network services across 101 sites in 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Adamawa, Borno, and Kano States. This follows a scheduled network maintenance operation completed on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

The company carried out the maintenance to address infrastructure challenges affecting its operations in the region. The operation involved redirecting traffic to a newly installed fibre span along the AFCOT–Bawo Village route in Adamawa State.

The upgrade replaced a previously damaged section of the network.

Confirming the completion of maintenance and restoration of service in the region, MTN Nigeria, in a press release, said, “We can confirm that all impacted sites have been fully restored, and services are now operating normally. We appreciate our subscribers’ patience and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during the downtime.”

MTN completed the work within the planned timeframe, with full service restoration achieved before 1 PM on August 24, according to the company’s press statement.

How MTN is addressing the infrastructure challenges in the region

The Northeast region of Nigeria faces unique challenges for telecom providers. For over a decade, the region grappled with security threats posed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The ongoing war has affected the infrastructure, and these frequent fibre cuts and vandalism have disrupted connectivity in recent years. MTN’s maintenance operation is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its infrastructure. The company aims to ensure consistent service delivery, particularly in underserved areas.

The scheduled maintenance was conducted during daylight hours. This timing ensured the safety of field engineers working on the linear and unprotected AFCOT–Bawo Village route. By prioritising engineer safety and efficient execution, MTN minimised downtime for customers.

MTN Nigeria’s efforts align with its mission to enhance digital inclusion across the country. The company is investing in infrastructure upgrades to support reliable connectivity. This is critical in regions like Adamawa, Borno, and Kano, where access to mobile and internet services drives economic and social development.

The restoration of services is a step toward addressing connectivity gaps in Nigeria’s Northeast. MTN’s proactive approach to maintenance helps mitigate the impact of infrastructure damage. The company continues to explore solutions to combat vandalism and other challenges affecting its network.

The temporary service disruptions affected both individual and enterprise customers. In areas like Mubi North and Michika, residents rely on MTN’s 2G, 3G, and 4G networks for communication and internet access. Businesses in Nasarawa and Kano also depend on enterprise connectivity for operations. The swift restoration ensured minimal disruption to daily activities.

Subscribers in the affected LGAs can now resume normal use of voice, data, and enterprise services.

The company’s proactive maintenance strategy sets a standard for telecom providers in Nigeria. By addressing vulnerabilities in its network, MTN ensures that customers stay connected. This is especially vital in regions where access to communication services is a lifeline for communities.

For subscribers in Adamawa, Borno, and Kano, the restoration brings relief. It also reinforces MTN’s role as a leading telecom provider in Nigeria. As the company navigates ongoing challenges, its focus on service reliability remains even more crucial.
