Mourinho insists he remains Chelsea’s “Special One” ahead of Stamford Bridge return with Benfica

Jose Mourinho has reminded Chelsea fans that he remains the club’s “Special One” as he prepares to return to Stamford Bridge with Benfica in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.

The Portuguese coach, who delivered three Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup across two spells with the Blues, was in typically combative mood when asked about his legacy.

Still the ‘Special One’

“I’m the biggest one until someone wins four,” Mourinho said, noting that Chelsea have yet to find a manager to surpass his domestic haul.

Mourinho’s self-assurance mirrors his first arrival in 2004 when he famously declared himself “a special one” after conquering Europe with Porto.

He went on to build Chelsea into a trophy machine, later adding a third league title in his second stint between 2013 and 2015.

Mourinho backs Chelsea to win the Champions League

Now 62, the veteran tactician backed current boss Enzo Maresca to restore Chelsea’s European pedigree.

“Chelsea have the potential to do it. I don’t see any reason to say, ‘No, Chelsea can’t win the Champions League.’ This is a moment of happiness and trust, they’re back on track.”

Mourinho, who has managed against Chelsea with Manchester United, Tottenham and Inter Milan, insisted sentiment won’t sway him on Tuesday night.

“I will always be a blue. I’m part of their history, they’re part of mine. But for 90 minutes, I’m red and I want to win.”

Benfica sacked Bruno Lage after a shock home defeat to Qarabag, paving the way for Mourinho’s return to the club where his managerial career began.
