Manchester United relieved pressure on Ruben Amorim with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford, with two first-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko, their first at home for the club.
Mount, who replaced Matheus Cunha in the starting lineup, gave United the lead in the eighth minute with a brilliant volley from just inside the box.
Sunderland improved after matching United’s 3-4-3 system shortly before half-time, having a penalty overturned and going close through substitute Dan Ballard, but they could not find a response.
The result lifts United one point off Sunderland in the table, with the Red Devils eighth on 10 points and the Black Cats still sixth.
