The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Ibrahim Badamasi University Lapai, Professor Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah, has expressed concerns over the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) project abandoned in the university, describing it as an “eyesore.”
According to him, the project needs urgent attention to enhance the University’s learning infrastructure.
Prof. Abdullah raised the concern during the formal introduction of the newly appointed vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. Mohammed Hadi Suleiman, to the Chancellor of the University, His Royal Highness, (Dr.) Umaru Farouk Bahago, at his Minna Palace.
Among the pressing concerns raised was the issue of inadequate funding to support the University’s rapid expansion.
He said, “Additionally, I want to emphasise the significance of the University’s role as a leading consortium in the Bida Basin Oil Exploration project, which has been put on hold for some time and requires reactivation.”
The Pro-Chancellor also drew the attention of the Chancellor to the College of Medical Sciences, adding that there was the need for increased funding and fast-tracking of the University Teaching Hospital under construction.
He said the hostel accommodation for medical students should be completed before they reach their final year to ensure a conducive learning environment.
Other key concerns raised included the need for infrastructure development, enhanced research funding, and improved staff welfare to elevate the University’s standing as a center of academic excellence.
Responding, Dr. Bahago promised more support and advocacy to the University.
He congratulated the new Council members and the vice-chancellor on their appointments and urged them to uphold the values of integrity, excellence and inclusiveness in piloting the affairs of the Institution.
“I want to assure the Council of my readiness to liaise with the Visitor, His Excellency, Farmer Muhammad Umaru Bago, and other relevant authorities to ensure that the University receives the necessary attention and resources,” he said.
