The Tutor General (TG) and Permanent Secretary (PS) of Education District II, Mrs. Anike Adekanye, has stated the critical role of indigenous languages in societal development, adding that traditional languages shape cultural identity, preserve heritage, and connect individuals to their roots.
Speaking during the Year 2025 International Mother Language Day celebration, themed: “Language Matters: Silver Jubilee of International Mother Language Day,” held weekend in Lagos, Mrs. Adekanye reiterated the need to prioritise mother tongue in education.
“Mother Language Day has been celebrated every February 21, and it should be given priority over other languages in the school curriculum,” she stated.
She urged educators and policymakers to ensure that indigenous languages are actively promoted within schools and local communities to safeguard Nigeria’s rich linguistic heritage for future generations.
“Let us continue to honour and promote our indigenous languages in our schools and communities, ensuring that our linguistic heritage is passed on to future generations,” she said.
The event coincided with the 25th anniversary of International Mother Languag0pe Day, an initiative launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
This year’s celebration included a two-day symposium held between February 20 and 21, 2025, focusing on the urgency of accelerating linguistic diversity efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable world by 2030.
