A mining pit in Kadauri community, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, has collapsed and trapped several artisanal miners.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, after heavy rainfall weakened the ground, causing multiple pits to cave in.
Confirming the tragedy, the Executive Secretary of Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZSEMA), Ambassador Bala Ahmad, told journalists in Gusau on Friday, September 26, 2025, that rescue efforts were ongoing.

He explained that the state government was working with local stakeholders to assess the extent of the damage.
“We are still gathering details, and our focus for now is to ensure that survivors are rescued and those injured receive immediate medical attention,” he said.
Community leaders in Kadauri reported that many miners were inside the pits when the collapse occurred, while others narrowly escaped.
They also revealed that some of the injured were rushed to Maru General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Residents have since joined emergency workers in the rescue operation, digging through debris with basic tools in hopes of pulling out survivors.
One local leader, who preferred anonymity, lamented the recurring dangers associated with illegal mining in the area.
“This is not the first time we are witnessing such a tragedy, and unfortunately, our people continue to take these risks because mining is their only source of livelihood,” he said.
The exact number of casualties remains unknown as search and rescue operations continue.
Authorities have assured the public that further information will be provided as the situation develops.
