Military Officers Overthrow Federal Government In Benin Republic

Military officers in the Benin Republic have taken control of the federal government.

Naija News learnt that a group of soldiers on Sunday Morning, December 7, 2025, announced the dissolution of the current government during a national broadcast.

The group, which labels itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, said the president, all political officeholders, and all state institutions have been effectively removed.

The Benin Republic president, Patrice Talon, has been in office since 2016 and has promised to leave office in April 2026 after the presidential poll.

In September 2024, the commander of the republican guard and head of Talon’s security, Djimon Tevoedjre, was arrested following an attempted coup.

Benin Republic is now the latest West African country to fall under the control of a military junta.

Recall that in November 2025, the military officers in Guinea-Bissau captured power after President Umaro Embaló, who was seeking re-election, and Fernando Dias, his main opponent, both declared victory in the country’s election, even though the electoral commission had not released official results.

The African Union (AU) subsequently announced the suspension of Guinea-Bissau following a coup in the West African country.

The AU decided “to suspend Guinea-Bissau from its bodies with immediate effect”, chairman Mahamoud Ali Youssouf said.
