Military equipment: Delta assembly approves $1bn from excess crude account

ASABA—PEEVED by the spate of killings in some parts of the country, the Delta State House of Assembly, has authorised the Federal Government to deduct Delta State share of the sum of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account for the procurement of military equipment to fight insurgency and other security challenges in the country.

Moving a motion for its approval and authorisation, which was seconded by Mr Johnson Erijo and adopted, Majority Leader of the House,  Mr Tim Owhefere, said security was classified hence discussions are not done in the open in order not to compromised.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had in a letter to the House, which was read at plenary by the Speaker, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori requested the House approval, intimating the House of the Federal Government’s plans to deduct the sum of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account for the procurement of military equipment to support the Armed Forces in its operations in fighting insurgency and other security challenges.

The request was approved following a voice vote called by the Speaker, Chief Oborevwori.

In another development, Governor  Okowa has notified the state House of Assembly of his intention to proceed on a two weeks annual vacation from July 13 to July 25,  2018.

Speaker of the House, Chief Oborevwori read the letter entitled “Notice of Vacation,” from the governor.  Okowa in the letter said, the 12 days leave would form part of his 2018 annual vacation.

The House adjourned sitting to July 31.
