Lionel Messi reached another height in his illustrious career on Tuesday night, becoming the all-time men’s international assists leader after providing two assists in Argentina’s 6–0 thrashing of Puerto Rico at Chase Stadium, Fort Lauderdale.
The Argentine captain’s latest feat saw him surpass Brazil’s Neymar and U.S. legend Landon Donovan, both tied on 58 assists, as he reached 60 assists for Argentina. The 37-year-old is now just two short of 400 assists across his professional career.
Messi inspires another rout in Fort Lauderdale
Although Messi didn’t score, he was instrumental in Argentina’s outstanding performance.
He set up Alexis Mac Allister and Lautaro Martínez, who each grabbed a brace, while Gonzalo Montiel and a Steven Echevarria own goal completed the one-sided scoreline.

Puerto Rico offered little resistance as Argentina wrapped up their U.S. tour in emphatic fashion.
Mac Allister, Martínez reflect on performance
Mac Allister, typically known for his creativity rather than goal-scoring, took his international tally to six goals in 41 appearances.
“The guys were joking at halftime, asking if I was going to score three goals. I’ve never done that, but I’m not desperate either,” the Liverpool midfielder said post-match. “What matters is helping the team win and build confidence.”
Meanwhile, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez, who continued his fine form with another brace, said: “It’s always special to score for Argentina. We have many young players coming through, and the chemistry is growing. Physically, I feel great and happy with this moment.”
Messi’s historic assist journey
Messi’s first international assist came nearly two decades ago at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when Argentina thrashed Serbia and Montenegro 6–0.
Since then, he has combined artistry and leadership to become both a record scorer and playmaker for his country.
With another record in the bag, Messi will return to Inter Miami to prepare for their MLS clash against Nashville SC this Saturday.
