he Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), Nigeria’s oldest Copyright Management Organisation (CMO) has received positive news from the National Copyright Commission (NCC).
The NCC has renewed MCSN’s operating license, allowing the society to continue its crucial work in managing musical copyright.
The renewal, effective January 1st, 2025, was conveyed in a letter (NCC/ADM./364/T/256, dated January 16th, 2025) which stated:
“The Nigerian Copyright Commission has approved the renewal of the license of the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (Ltd/Gte), to operate as a Collective Management Organisation in respect of rights in musical works and sound recording. This renewal is with effect from 1st January, 2025.”
The letter further emphasised that the renewal is subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act, 2022, and the Copyright (Collective Management Organizations) Regulations, 2007.
This positive development follows a separate letter (NCC/ ADM.364/T/22, dated December 12th, 2024) from the NCC commending MCSN’s performance.
The Commission specifically praised the Society’s “collection of licensing fees for the use of works in your repertoire,” urging MCSN “to continue to build on its achievements, for the benefit of its members and affiliates and in line with global best practices.”
This double dose of good news underscores MCSN’s dedication to protecting the rights of its members and upholding the integrity of the Nigerian music industry.
The renewed license ensures the continued operation of this vital organisation, further strengthening its ability to collect royalties and distribute them fairly to musicians and rights holders. The NCC’s commendation serves as a testament to MCSN’s effective and efficient operations.
