Maritime Sector Harbours Vast Economic Opportunities For All Professions – LASUSOTAL Guest Lecturer

LAGOS – The maritime sector has been revealed as a hub of potential for economic breakthrough for a vast range of professionals and incredible revenue boost for the nation.
This revelation was made by Dr Charles Okaga on his visit to the Lagos State University School of Transport and Logistics as a Guest Lecturer on Wednesday.

In his short but fully loaded lecture that delved on the “Essentials Of Port Automation“, the LASU Alumnus and former boss of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) did an articulate breakdown of the array of economic opportunities waiting to be explored by professionals such as the lawyers, engineers, architects, transport and logistics practitioners and many more.

According to the Technical Assistant to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, when the vast opportunities that abound in the maritime sector are fully harnessed by stakeholders, the nation will experience an incredible revenue boost.

The seasoned logistician and port administrator also harped on the importance of Transport and Logistics to the everyday lives the of the nation’s citizens.
Dr Okaga disclosed that a lot of ICT-propelled policy changes have been taking place at the Nigerian port today such that clearances that used to take weeks in the past now take just about an hour.
The articulate speaker credited this incredible improvement to the emerging and contemporary trends manifesting in port automation.


According to him, the deployment of electronic call-up system has immensely helped in decongesting the Tincan Island and its environment.
“There are vast career opportunities in the Marine sector.
“It is an industry that integrates all professions; for instance, Law (regulatory, arbitration and so on.
“The industry also supports culture and tourism”; he tutored.

Meanwhile, he tutored the attentive scholars on the difference between ‘Transport’ and ‘Logistics’ even as he explained that Transport is about the movement of goods from one point to the other while Logistics is a much broader engagement of the transportation, warehousing and the inventory management till the ultimate satisfaction of the end user of the goods.

Also on visit with Okaga was another LASU Alumnus who is also professionally seasoned in Marine transport and logistics, Captain Iheanacho who also discharged a well valued lecture on the importance of transport and logistics and the immense opportunities for the students of Transport and Logistics on graduation.
He spoke glowingly of the Dean, LASU School of Transport and Logistics, Prof Charles Asenime as a “value-added to the academia and humanity”.
Meanwhile, the captain of all-round experience has hinted the Transport and Logistics students concerning the vast disparities between the lecture room information and what to meet in the practical world .

Tha Captain of veteran status exuded much pride and delight to see his Alma Mater (LASU) having developed so vast and wide in all ramifications.
“LASU is a trailblazer”, Iheanacho declared.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, Prof Charles Asenime, the Dean of the School of Transport and Logistics had recalled how tedious it was to get Dr Okaga, the Guest Lecturer to come and deliver such a lecture for the benefit of the students because, Okaga has always been very busy holding one vital portfolio or the other.
“Bringing Charles (Okaga) down here finally today is like the unusual privilege of catching a whale from the sea”; Asenime delighted.
