Manchester United have turned down a request from midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to leave Old Trafford on loan.
The 20-year-old academy graduate asked to secure a temporary move in search of more game time, but United have told him they value his role in the squad and want him to stay and fight for his place.
Mainoo, who played the full 90 minutes in Wednesday’s EFL Cup penalty shootout defeat at Grimsby, has been an unused substitute in both of United’s opening Premier League fixtures.
Head coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear the youngster is competing directly with captain Bruno Fernandes for minutes in midfield.
The England international remains under contract until 2027, though talks over an extension have stalled. Sources indicate he has no desire to leave permanently but is concerned about his Premier League opportunities this season.
With the transfer deadline approaching on Monday, it remains to be seen if further discussions take place, but United’s stance is that Mainoo will not be leaving the club on loan.
