Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United, claiming the club has “lost its soul” and warning that he has no faith in manager Ruben Amorim to reverse their decline.
Speaking on the latest edition of The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC, the club’s all-time leading scorer said United were “broken” and admitted he now goes to games expecting them to lose.
United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Saturday was their latest setback, leaving them 14th in the Premier League table and without back-to-back league wins since August 2024. Under Amorim, they have collected just 34 points from 33 league matches.
Despite the poor run, the board is said to be standing by Amorim. But Rooney insists drastic action is needed.
“I am not seeing anything which gives me any confidence; there needs to be big changes, in my opinion,” he said.
“Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester United back.”
The former England captain, who lifted five Premier League titles during his 13-year spell at Old Trafford, went further, suggesting some of the current squad “don’t deserve to wear the shirt” and that supporters are “waiting for the club to crumble.”
United finished 15th last season, their lowest league finish in over 50 years. Amorim, who arrived from Sporting Lisbon last November after winning consecutive league titles in Portugal, has struggled to transfer his success to England.
Saturday’s loss also extended United’s winless away run in the league to eight matches, their worst since 2019.
For Rooney, the problems run deeper than results on the pitch. He pointed to a collapse in the club’s culture and uncertainty surrounding its leadership.
“There needs to be a clear message from the owners,” Rooney added. “Whether that is the Glazers, or Sir Jim Ratcliffe, there has to be a message of where this club is going. At the moment we are all sitting there waiting for it to crumble.
“The culture of that football club has gone. I see it on a daily basis. I see staff losing jobs, people walking out of jobs.
“I’ve got two kids in the academy at that football club and I really hope this doesn’t affect what they’re doing. What I’m seeing at that football club is not Manchester United.”
