Man United approve Zirkzee exit, sets asking price as Roma push for transfer

Manchester United have approved Joshua Zirkzee’s exit ahead of the January transfer window, clearing the way for Roma to accelerate negotiations for a loan deal with an option to buy.

The 24-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated with his lack of minutes under Ruben Amorim, and with his World Cup ambitions at stake, United have now communicated the financial parameters Roma must meet to secure the Dutch striker.

Roma target loan deal with purchase option

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, United are prepared to release Zirkzee on loan for the remainder of the campaign, provided Roma include a mandatory or performance-triggered option to buy set at a minimum of €35 million (£30.9m).

The structure mirrors the fee Roma owe Everton for Evan Ferguson’s permanent transfer.

Roma are willing to cover half of Zirkzee’s salary during the loan as they seek a central attacking upgrade.

The Giallorossi are ready to prioritise Zirkzee over other targets, including Tottenham’s Mathys Tel, and could even terminate Ferguson’s existing loan to create room for the Dutchman.

The move would reunite Zirkzee with Serie A, a league where he previously thrived and regained form in his career.

United weigh squad depth as injuries mount

While Roma push forward, United have internal reservations. Reports from England indicate the club may delay the striker’s departure until summer due to mounting squad constraints.

Benjamin Sesko’s knee issue, combined with the upcoming AFCON absences of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, has already stretched attacking depth.

There is also a tactical debate at Carrington. Amorim views Zirkzee as a hybrid playmaker-forward, and some within the club believe he could still be deployed behind a No.9 as injuries pile up.

Player keen, negotiations enter crucial phase

Zirkzee remains fully aligned with a move that guarantees playing time as he fights to stay in Ronald Koeman’s World Cup plans.

Roma are confident a deal can be struck once United stabilise their squad outlook or gain clarity on Sesko’s recovery timeline.
